The open-air museum was created in the 1920s in Nowogród near Łomża as the Kurpiowski Museum. The founder of the institution was Adam Chętnik, a well-known ethnographer and social activist. It is one of the two oldest open-air museums in Poland. The idea of opening the Kurpiowski Museum facility was founded in 1919. Adam Chętnik bought wasteland after the former city brickyard on the Skarpa nad Narwia and developed the area. In 1923, the first building was erected in the prepared area. It was a wooden building that had previously belonged to the local Reconstruction Office, moved to the area of the future Museum and adapted for exhibition purposes. Over the next four years, more outbuildings arrived, including a watchman's cottage, as well as gazebos, benches and tables. Currently, on the open-air museum area of about 3.5 ha, there are 23 residential and farm buildings with appropriate equipment and several dozen objects of small architecture: rams, chapels, wells, rivers, etc. All buildings are of log construction, from the end of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century, acquired from the area of the Kurpiowska Zielona Forest. The area is characterized by specific, traditional folk culture, original Kurpie clothing, sculpture, ornamentation and wooden construction. Kurpiowski huts placed on stones represent almost classic forms in wooden folk architecture. In addition to the exhibition activities carried out here, during the summer, folklore events presenting the rich culture of the Kurpie region take place in the open-air museum.
